Pune Municipal Corporation plans to reinstall speed breakers across nearly 75 km of city roads that had been cleared for an international cycling event.
Pune| February 2, 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation has decided to reinstall speed breakers and traffic-calming measures on nearly 75 kilometres of city roads that were temporarily cleared to facilitate a major cycling tour. The move comes after the conclusion of the event and is aimed at restoring routine traffic safety measures across key road stretches.
Several arterial and connector roads across central and suburban Pune had their speed breakers and rumble strips removed to ensure smooth and uninterrupted surfaces for cyclists. While the improved road conditions were appreciated during the event, officials observed a noticeable increase in vehicle speeds once normal traffic resumed, raising concerns over pedestrian and commuter safety.

Civic officials stated that the reinstallation will be carried out in a phased manner, prioritising accident-prone zones, residential areas, and locations near schools, hospitals, and busy intersections. The work will be coordinated with traffic authorities to ensure that speed breakers are installed according to standard safety guidelines and do not cause unnecessary inconvenience to motorists.
Authorities also clarified that the objective is not to undo the road improvements made for the cycling event, but to strike a balance between smoother travel and effective speed regulation. In addition to speed breakers, proper signage, road markings, and visibility measures will be implemented to improve overall traffic discipline.
The cycling tour had showcased the potential for better road infrastructure and smoother surfaces across the city, prompting citizens to demand similar upgrades on other major routes. However, traffic experts have emphasised that speed management remains essential, especially on wide roads where higher speeds increase the risk of serious accidents.

Some motorists have expressed concerns that reinstating speed breakers could slow down traffic flow, while resident groups have largely welcomed the decision, citing improved safety for pedestrians and two-wheeler riders. Officials have assured that speed breakers will be placed only where necessary and designed to meet current safety norms.
In conclusion, the decision to reinstall speed breakers on 75 km of Pune roads marks a return to standard traffic safety practices following the temporary changes made for the cycling tour. While smoother roads continue to benefit commuters, the renewed focus on speed control is expected to improve road safety as the city resumes normal traffic conditions.
