Pune’s air pollution is as severe as Delhi’s year-round, says PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram. Rapid urbanization, traffic, and construction drive pollution; PMC partners with IITM for data-driven mitigation strategies
Pune| February 13, 2026: Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram has sounded an urgent alert on Pune’s worsening air quality, stating that the city’s pollution levels are comparable to those in Delhi. Highlighting that the problem persists throughout the year, the commissioner emphasized the need for immediate, science-based intervention to protect public health.

Rapid urban development, a growing number of vehicles, intensive construction activity, traffic congestion, energy consumption, and climate change impacts have been identified as key contributors to Pune’s deteriorating air quality. The city has expanded nearly fourfold in the past five years, with urban areas now housing approximately 50% of India’s population, making pollution control crucial for sustainable development.
To address the crisis, PMC has partnered with the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), forming a dedicated air pollution task force comprising PMC officials, climate scientists, NGOs, housing societies, and academic experts. The collaboration aims to scientifically monitor air quality trends and implement a phased action plan over 3, 6, and 12 months. IITM will provide technical guidance on mitigation strategies tailored to Pune’s urban environment.

Commissioner Ram stressed that sustainable and climate-resilient urban growth must be prioritized, with stricter regulation of emissions, promotion of public transport, and adoption of green infrastructure. The initiative signals PMC’s commitment to ensuring cleaner air, healthier communities, and long-term sustainable development in one of India’s fastest-growing cities.
