Pune Municipal Corporation greenlights ₹126 crore double-decker flyover at Mahatma Phule Chowk, integrating road and metro to slash congestion on busy Mundhwa-Kharadi corridor.

Pune | : Thursday, March 19, 2026: Pune’s civic authorities have approved a game-changing infrastructure project to combat chronic traffic snarls plaguing the IT hub of Kharadi and surrounding suburbs. The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) standing committee unanimously cleared the construction of a double-decker flyover at Mahatma Phule Chowk on the Mundhwa-Keshavnagar to Kharadi bypass road during its March 17 meeting. Standing Committee Chairman Shrinath Bhimale hailed the decision as a “long-term relief” for daily commuters battling peak-hour gridlocks at this critical junction, which handles flows from Kharadi bypass, Mundhwa, Keshavnagar, and Tadigutta chowk.

Estimated at ₹126 crore, the 1,080-meter-long structure will feature a 16-meter-wide dual carriageway bridge spanning 769 meters, complemented by 136-meter and 148-meter approach roads on the Kharadi and Mundhwa sides respectively. Uniquely, the design incorporates space for a future metro line running atop the vehicular flyover, ensuring seamless multimodal integration with minimal land acquisition hurdles. An additional ₹9.42 crore has been earmarked for ancillary development works, with completion targeted within two years post-tender.

The approval follows months of encroachment clearances around the chowk and persistent commuter demands for intervention. PMC officials noted the project’s alignment with broader urban mobility plans, including recent successes like the Savitribai Phule Pune University double-decker flyover. This stretch, vital for EON IT Park and Magarpatta workers, sees thousands of vehicles daily amid Pune’s explosive growth now Maharashtra’s second-largest metropolis with over 7 million residents.

Traffic experts predict a 40-50% reduction in travel times once operational, boosting economic productivity in the Kharadi-Mundhwa belt. The move aligns with PMC’s aggressive flyover expansion, including plans for nine more double-deckers citywide by 2028.
