Six-laning work on the Pune-Bangalore National Highway is progressing rapidly, with major construction near Kolhapur expected to ease long-standing traffic congestion.

Pune|27 January,2026: The long-pending six-laning project of the Pune–Bangalore National Highway has gained significant momentum, offering much-needed relief to commuters and transporters who routinely face severe traffic congestion near Kolhapur. This highway is one of the most crucial road corridors in western and southern India, handling heavy daily traffic including passenger vehicles, interstate buses and freight movement. With increasing vehicle volume over the years, narrow stretches and busy junctions had turned parts of the route into permanent bottlenecks, especially at Kolhapur’s city entry points.

A major focus of the ongoing work is the construction of a flyover at Nagaon Phata, a key junction connecting Kolhapur city with the Shiroli industrial area. This location has long been notorious for traffic snarls during peak hours, often bringing vehicular movement to a standstill. The flyover construction has now entered an advanced stage, with massive girders being installed using heavy hydraulic cranes. Each girder weighs several tonnes, and their placement marks a critical phase in the project aimed at grade separation and smoother traffic flow.

During the construction period, temporary traffic diversions have been implemented, forcing vehicles to use service roads in certain stretches. This has led to short-term inconvenience for commuters, particularly during morning and evening rush hours when industrial traffic peaks. Authorities have advised motorists to follow traffic signage carefully and allow additional travel time while passing through the affected zones. Despite the temporary challenges, officials maintain that the inconvenience is necessary to ensure long-term benefits.

Once completed, the six-lane highway and the new flyover are expected to significantly reduce congestion, eliminate frequent traffic jams, and improve overall road safety. The upgraded corridor will allow uninterrupted vehicular movement, reduce travel time between Pune, Kolhapur and Bengaluru, and support smoother freight transportation. Improved road geometry and wider lanes are also expected to lower accident risks, particularly for heavy vehicles.

The Pune–Bangalore highway plays a vital role in regional economic activity, serving industrial hubs, agricultural markets and tourism destinations across Maharashtra and neighbouring states. Faster and safer connectivity will benefit businesses, logistics operators and daily commuters alike. The project also aligns with broader national efforts to modernise highway infrastructure and strengthen intercity connectivity.

As work progresses steadily, commuters can look forward to lasting relief from traffic congestion at Kolhapur’s entry points. Until completion, motorists are urged to remain patient, follow traffic advisories and cooperate with on-ground authorities. The ongoing upgrades promise to transform one of the busiest highway stretches into a more efficient and commuter-friendly route in the near future.
