Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sushma Andhare demands Maharashtra Women’s Commission chairperson Rupali Chakankar’s resignation over her alleged ties to rape-accused self-styled godman Ashok Kharat in the Nashik scandal.

Friday, March 20, 2026 | Pune, Maharashtra Fresh allegations of black magic have intensified the high- profile rape case against retired Merchant Navy officer and self-styled godman “Captain” Ashok Kharat in Nashik, sparking a fierce political firestorm. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sushma Andhare has targeted Maharashtra State Commission for Women (MSCW) chairperson Rupali Chakankar, accusing her of shielding the accused and demanding her immediate ouster.
Kharat, 67, was arrested last week by Nashik police after a 35-year-old woman filed an FIR alleging repeated sexual assaults from 2022 to December 2025. Posing as a numerologist and spiritual healer, he allegedly drugged victims with intoxicants in food and water, used hypnotism and black magic threats like cursing husbands or ruining families to silence them, and recorded 58 obscene videos. Booked under the Maharashtra Human Sacrifice and Black Magic Act, 2013, Kharat remains in custody until March 24.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by SRPF commandant Tejaswini Satpute, is probing the case, including extortion links and searches at Kharat’s Nashik residence and Sinnar farmhouse. The scandal has exposed his proximity to politicians like NCP’s Sunil Tatkare, former minister Deepak Kesarkar, and Chakankar, with viral photos showing her holding an umbrella for him.
Andhare cited a prior incident where Chakankar allegedly pressured an organization to apologize for accusing Kharat of sexual exploitation, questioning her fitness for office: “She has no right to hold such a position if she protects deviants.” Congress chief Harshvardhan Sapkal echoed calls for her resignation, while anti-superstition group MANS demands strict action against occult practices. The controversy underscores tensions over women’s safety and political misuse of institutions in Maharashtra, with opposition parties urging thorough probes into Kharat’s elite network.
