A confrontation broke out at MIT Art, Design and Technology University campus in Pune after alleged online harassment triggered a scuffle, raising student safety concerns.
Pune| 5th March 2026Pune witnessed a tense situation at the MIT Art, Design and Technology University campus after a confrontation between students escalated into a physical scuffle, prompting serious safety concerns among students, parents, and faculty.

According to sources, the incident stemmed from an alleged case of online harassment that involved a group of students. What began with abusive messages exchanged over social media soon spilled over into the physical realm inside the university grounds, leading to arguments and pushing between groups. Eyewitnesses reported raised voices and a heightened emotional atmosphere, prompting intervention by campus security.
The university management has stated that it is taking the matter seriously and has initiated an internal inquiry into the events. “Student safety is our top priority,” the administration said in a statement. “We are working closely with local authorities to ensure a peaceful environment on campus.”
In recent years, educational campuses nationwide have seen an increase in incidents where disputes originating online have manifested into real-world confrontations. Psychologists and campus safety experts say that online communication platforms often provide a space where conflicts can widen before being addressed offline.

Dr. Sunita Patil, a child psychologist based in Pune, explains, “Social media amplifies emotions. Students may react impulsively without understanding the consequences of their actions. When peer groups get involved, what starts as a verbal disagreement can quickly escalate.”
Campus administrators at universities across India have been urged to implement digital literacy and conflict resolution programs to help students navigate online interactions responsibly.
Following the scuffle, security personnel separated the groups and spoke with those involved. The university has sent notices to parents of students directly connected to the incident and called for counselling sessions.
Local police officials confirmed that no arrests were made and that the situation had been brought under control before it spiralled further.

“We have registered the complaint and are monitoring the situation,” a police representative said. “We encourage institutions to respond proactively to disputes before they escalate.”
The incident has brought student safety to the forefront of conversations at MIT ADT University. Some students expressed concern over the lack of preventive measures to defuse tensions arising from online harassment.
A third-year student, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “Words over social media shouldn’t lead to fights on campus. We need more awareness and support systems so these disagreements don’t turn violent.”
Faculty members have urged for workshops and seminars to address digital behaviour, online responsibility, and anger management. They believe a holistic approach, combining education and counselling, could prevent similar incidents in the future.
The university administration has promised to set up a committee involving faculty, counsellors, and student representatives to examine campus conduct policies. This committee will be tasked with proposing changes to the student code of conduct, particularly relating to digital behaviour and conflict resolution.
Parents, student unions, and community groups have all weighed in, calling for a safe and supportive campus environment where academic focus is not overshadowed by preventable conflicts.
