Pune electricity users save ₹8.6 crore on power bills via smart Time-of-Day metering and daytime tariff discounts under a new MSEDCL initiative.

Pune | 17 February, 2026- Nearly 10 lakh electricity consumers in Pune have benefitted from significant savings on their power bills thanks to the Time-of-Day (ToD) metering system. Over a seven-month period from July 2025 to January 2026, the cumulative relief provided through this smart metering initiative exceeded ₹8.6 crore. The move represents a major step in modernising electricity billing while promoting energy-efficient usage patterns, especially during daytime hours when solar power contribution is high.

The ToD system charges electricity consumed during specific periods — primarily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. — at a reduced rate, currently offering a discount of around ₹0.80 per unit for domestic consumers. Officials have indicated that this discount could increase to ₹1 per unit in the future. These measures incentivise households to shift high-energy activities to daytime hours, optimising electricity usage and reducing overall bills.

To benefit from the scheme, consumers must have smart ToD meters installed at their premises. These meters record electricity consumption in time-segmented slots, enabling accurate billing based on actual usage patterns. Installation is provided free of cost, and authorities have urged residents to cooperate with field teams for smooth deployment.

The rollout has already reached nearly 9.84 lakh consumers in the Pune Circle, with continued installation expected in phases to cover more households. In specific divisions, the savings have been substantial: Ganeshkhind City Division recorded about ₹3.69 crore in savings for 3.66 lakh consumers, Rastapeth around ₹3.53 crore for 3.63 lakh consumers, and Pune Rural Division contributed ₹1.37 crore through 2.5 lakh smart connections.

Officials emphasise that ToD meters are not just about financial savings but also improve billing transparency and demand management. Time-segmented metering allows the grid to operate more efficiently and reflects the real cost of power generation. As renewable energy, especially solar, increases in Maharashtra’s energy mix, daytime consumption becomes more cost-effective for both consumers and the power system.

Authorities have also addressed concerns and misconceptions regarding smart meters, assuring residents that these devices will not increase electricity bills but instead provide more accurate readings and fair billing. Consumers who adjust their usage to take advantage of daytime discounts can achieve tangible financial benefits.

Looking ahead, Pune’s experience highlights how smart metering and ToD billing can lead to significant savings while encouraging efficient energy usage. With ongoing expansion of smart meters and potential enhancements to daytime discounts, the benefits are expected to grow, making the city’s electricity ecosystem more responsive, transparent, and cost-efficient.
