Pune
Pune’s Katraj Milk Union is officially renamed after Ajit Pawar, marking a historic tribute to his legacy in Maharashtra’s cooperative movement.
Pune | 04 February, 2026 – In a historic move honoring one of Maharashtra’s most influential cooperative leaders, the Pune District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Limited, popularly known as the Katraj Milk Union, has been officially renamed Ajitdada Pawar Pune District Cooperative Milk Producers Union, Katraj. The union’s board of directors passed the resolution unanimously on January 31, 2026, as a tribute to the late Ajit Pawar, whose sudden death earlier this year left a lasting impact on the state’s political and cooperative sectors. This renaming not only commemorates Pawar’s legacy but also reinforces the union’s commitment to sustainable growth, rural development, and farmer empowerment.

Ajit Pawar was widely regarded as a guiding force in Maharashtra’s cooperative movement, particularly in strengthening rural institutions and advocating for farmers’ welfare. His efforts spanned dairy farming, credit cooperatives, and rural infrastructure projects. Known for his strategic vision, Pawar played a pivotal role in modernizing milk processing facilities at Katraj, ensuring farmers received fair prices, and streamlining the union’s operations. Board officials highlighted that Pawar actively participated in meetings, provided administrative guidance, and championed initiatives that shaped the cooperative’s long-term strategy. As one union official remarked, “Dada’s vision was always focused on strengthening cooperatives and empowering farmers. His guidance shaped many key decisions of the Sangh.”
The decision to rename the union was spearheaded by Adv. Swapnil Dhamdhere, Chairman of the union, with full support from directors including Tanaji Jagtap, Gopalrao Anna Mhaske, Vishnukaka Hinge, and Balasaheb Newale. This move, while symbolic, carries practical significance: the union is now undergoing administrative updates to reflect the new name in all official records. By officially associating the institution with Ajit Pawar, the cooperative underscores its commitment to uphold his principles of rural empowerment, cooperative solidarity, and strategic planning.
Pune’s cooperative sector has long served as a backbone for the region’s agricultural and economic stability. The Katraj Milk Union plays a vital role in connecting dairy farmers to markets, ensuring quality dairy products, and sustaining rural livelihoods. This renaming aligns with similar initiatives in Baramati and Pimpri-Chinchwad, where Pawar’s contributions are being honored in local cooperative enterprises. As the dairy sector continues to face challenges, including market competition from brands like Chitale and Gokul, rising production costs, and distribution complexities, strong leadership and strategic governance remain crucial.
For farmers, the renaming symbolizes institutional stability at a time of market and climatic uncertainties. For consumers, it reinforces a commitment to quality and the heritage of Pune’s dairy cooperatives. Policymakers and stakeholders see it as a model of effective governance blending social welfare with economic sustainability. The tribute to Ajit Pawar goes beyond a name—it is a recognition of his enduring influence on cooperative growth, rural development, and agricultural empowerment in Maharashtra.
The renaming of the Katraj Milk Union to Ajitdada Pawar Pune District Cooperative Milk Producers Union marks a significant milestone in Pune’s cooperative history. It is a testament to the legacy of Ajit Pawar and a reminder of the critical role that visionary leadership plays in sustaining rural institutions. As the union adopts its new identity, it sets the stage for continued progress, collaboration, and service to the cooperative movement, ensuring that Ajit Pawar’s vision lives on for generations of farmers and communities.
