Pune District Cracks Down on Gas Hoarding and Black Market Activity

Authorities in Pune are taking strict action against agencies and distributors hoarding domestic gas or selling it on the black market, amid ongoing shortages affecting households and businesses

Pune | 11 March, 2026:Following reports of domestic gas shortages in Pune city and district, the district administration has initiated raids against hoarding and black-market practices by gas agencies and distributors. District Collector Jitendra Tude confirmed the deployment of multiple teams in urban and rural areas to monitor supply chains and enforce strict action against violators.

In the urban region, three dedicated teams have been set up covering Pune city and Pimpri, each comprising three divisional officers and two supply inspectors. In rural areas, each taluka now has a team headed by the Tehsildar, including supply inspectors, police officials, and regional representatives from gas companies. These teams are instructed to conduct surprise inspections and take immediate action to prevent misuse or illegal diversion of domestic gas.

The shortage has begun impacting hotels and restaurants, leading some to use domestic cylinders illegally. This, in turn, has caused difficulties for households trying to book gas, with numerous complaints of hoarding and black-market sales reported to the district authorities.

The administration has also emphasized public awareness, advising citizens not to believe rumours about gas scarcity, and assuring that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure fair distribution. Officers are required to submit detailed reports of inspections and raids to the district administration, ensuring transparency and accountability in the crackdown.

Collector Jitendra Tude warned that stringent action will continue against those found hoarding or misusing domestic gas, signaling the administration’s zero-tolerance approach to black-market activity.
