Pune | March 31, 2026: In response to the ongoing domestic LPG shortage affecting rural households, the Food and Civil Supplies Department has approved a temporary kerosene distribution plan for Pune district through fair price ration shops. A quota of 2.04 lakh litres of kerosene has been sanctioned for the district, with preparations underway to supply three litres per eligible beneficiary in rural areas. Officials said the distribution will be carried out mainly in villages, as the scheme will exclude Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad cities along with 14 municipal council areas. The decision has been taken after rural residents reported severe delays in LPG cylinder availability, creating hardship for families as well as small-scale businesses.

The shortage is being linked to supply disruptions caused by the continuing conflict in Gulf countries, which has impacted fuel availability and logistics. While urban areas have shown relatively stable supply, rural consumers are reportedly being given delivery registration dates after 45 days, compared to 30 days in cities. This has led to an alarming situation in several parts of the district, with many households struggling to manage daily cooking needs. Several small industries and rural businesses have also been affected due to the lack of cooking and operational fuel. The department has decided to make kerosene available through the public distribution system as an emergency relief measure. However, officials admitted that the sanctioned quota is insufficient when compared to the total number of beneficiaries in the district. Pune district has around 8.21 lakh ration card beneficiaries, and the current kerosene allocation is expected to cover only about one-third of households. This has triggered early demands for an increased quota.

The distribution mechanism and pricing are yet to be finalised. Key details such as the selling rate for consumers and the per-litre commission for ration shop owners will be decided by the state government. District Supply Officer Mahesh Sudhalkar said official orders are expected within the next week, after which kerosene distribution will begin immediately. More than 1,800 ration shop dealers across the district, along with licensed sellers, will be authorised to distribute kerosene under the temporary arrangement.
