A 99-year-old resident was rescued from a blazing sixth-floor flat in Dhankawadi after firefighters swiftly brought the fire under control in a dense residential building.

Pune | November10, 2025:  In the afternoon of 9 November in the Dhankawadi area of Pune, a serious fire broke out in a sixth-floor apartment near Shankar Maharaj Math, sparking panic among residents when dense smoke and flames began spreading rapidly. The blaze is believed to have originated in the kitchen of the flat and quickly damaged electrical wiring, kitchen equipment and wall surfaces as it advanced.

Several fire crews from the city’s fire stations responded promptly to the emergency call. They deployed hose-reel lines and extinguishers to bring the fire under control before it could spread to neighbouring units. During the operation, personnel located and extracted the flat’s occupant — a 99-year-old man, who had sustained serious burn injuries. He was immediately transferred to hospital care by his relatives for further treatment.

The rescue effort was led by the Deputy Fire Officer, who coordinated teams from Katraj and Gangadham fire stations. Those involved included firemen and drivers who carried out the operation efficiently despite the challenge of reaching a higher-floor flat in a densely populated building. Their quick response played a vital role in preventing a larger catastrophe in the high-rise residential complex.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway. Authorities are examining the kitchen area where the blaze is thought to have started, alongside electrical installations and wiring that may have contributed to rapid flame spread. Local residents have been warned about the risks of unattended cooking appliances and outdated wiring in older high-rise buildings.

The incident underscores the vulnerability of senior citizens living alone or on upper floors in apartment complexes when fire safety measures are lacking or fire access is delayed. Residents and building managements are being encouraged to ensure functional fire-escape routes, clear access for fire services, regular checks of electrical and gas installations, and periodic fire-drills — especially in congested urban neighbourhoods.
