A woman was killed by stray dogs in Pune’s Chakan area; CCTV footage confirms no assault, raising serious safety concerns.
Pune | 17 March, 2026: A shocking incident in Pune has triggered widespread concern after a woman was brutally mauled to death by a pack of stray dogs in the Chakan area, with CCTV footage later confirming that no assault was involved. The victim, identified as Shobha Waghmare, was reportedly returning home in the early hours of the morning when the attack took place on a service road near the Pune-Nashik Highway. According to police and initial reports, the incident occurred around 2 am, when a group of nearly six stray dogs suddenly surrounded and attacked her, leaving her with severe injuries that led to her death on the spot.

The case initially raised suspicion after her body was found in a distressing condition, prompting concerns about possible foul play. However, a detailed examination of CCTV footage from the area clarified that the woman was alone at the time and was attacked solely by the dogs, ruling out any criminal assault. The visuals reportedly show the woman attempting to defend herself, but the intensity of the attack left her with no chance of survival.
The tragic incident has reignited debate over the growing menace of stray dogs in rapidly urbanising areas like Chakan, which has seen significant industrial and population growth in recent years. Local residents and activists have expressed anger over what they describe as inadequate action by civic authorities, pointing to earlier warnings, including an incident earlier this year where a suspected rabid dog bit over 30 people in the same region.
Experts note that factors such as poor waste management, open garbage dumping, and lack of systematic sterilisation and vaccination drives contribute to the increasing number of aggressive stray dog packs. In areas with low night-time activity and poor lighting, such risks become even more severe, especially for individuals travelling alone during late hours.
The incident has also created fear among residents, with many demanding immediate and concrete action from local authorities to control the stray dog population and improve public safety measures. Civic bodies have stated that vaccination and monitoring efforts are ongoing, but the scale of the issue continues to challenge enforcement on the ground.
