A 32-year-old Pune IT professional died by suicide at Lion’s Point in Lonavala after sending distress messages. Rescue teams retrieved his body from a deep gorge.
Pune | 13 February, 2026- A young IT professional from Pune was found dead early Thursday morning after taking his own life at the popular cliff-top viewpoint known as Lion’s Point in Lonavala. The deceased, identified as 32-year-old Virendra Sinha, was a resident of Baner and employed with a private IT company in Pune. Authorities recovered his body from a deep gorge below the viewpoint following an intense search and rescue operation. Morning visitors first alerted police after spotting his car parked near the edge, which triggered concerns and prompted an immediate search of the area.
Initial findings from the investigation indicate that Sinha had sent distress messages to his wife and close friends shortly before he died. These communications reportedly expressed emotional distress and are being analysed by investigators to piece together the circumstances that led to this tragic decision. Police have registered a case and are collecting all relevant evidence as part of the ongoing probe.

Local police teams, supported by volunteer rescue groups, conducted the recovery effort in challenging terrain, as Lion’s Point is known for steep cliffs and difficult access. The area, a favourite for tourists seeking panoramic views of the Sahyadri hills and sunrise scenery, has in the past witnessed several accidents and attempts due to its rugged topography and lack of comprehensive safety barriers. The geography of the site makes quick and safe rescues difficult, especially in low light, highlighting persistent concerns about public safety around such natural attractions.
Following the recovery of the body, police coordinated with forensic teams and notified the family, who are cooperating with authorities as the investigation continues. Officials have stated that communications from Sinha’s phone and email accounts are being examined to better understand his state of mind in the days leading up to the incident. They are also exploring whether any external pressures or personal hardships could have contributed to the tragedy.
The incident has reignited conversations about the need for improved safety infrastructure at scenic lookout points like Lion’s Point. Residents and civic activists have long urged authorities to install stronger railings, warning signs, and surveillance systems to prevent accidental falls and discourage impulsive actions. Mental health advocates, meanwhile, emphasise the importance of broader awareness and access to supportive resources, especially among young professionals facing stress and isolation.
As the investigation unfolds, police are expected to release more details once forensic analysis and interviews with associates and family members are complete. For now, the community mourns the loss of a talented young individual whose life tragically ended at a site beloved by tourists and locals alike.
