Pimpri‑Chinchwad Police recruitment attracts 14,779 applicants, including engineers, MBAs and postgraduates, reflecting intense competition and rising unemployment.
Pune | 17 February, 2026- Pimpri‑Chinchwad, Maharashtra — The ongoing recruitment drive for 462 police constable posts in the Pimpri‑Chinchwad Police Commissionerate has seen an overwhelming response, with 14,779 candidates applying for a limited number of vacancies. The massive turnout highlights intense competition for government jobs and the growing challenge of unemployment among educated youth in the region.
Among the applicants, 5,423 are graduates or postgraduates, including individuals from engineering, commerce, management, science, and social work backgrounds. Specifically, there are 156 engineering graduates, 59 MBA degree holders, 139 M.Com postgraduates, 93 M.Sc graduates, 23 MCA holders, and 18 MSW postgraduates. Additional candidates include law graduates, trained teachers, and specialists in fields such as hotel management, journalism, and physical education, reflecting the high level of competition and the widespread aspiration for stable government employment.

The recruitment process began with rigorous physical efficiency tests, assessing candidates across a 50-mark evaluation that includes sprints, athletic runs, and shot put. Male applicants are tested on a 100‑metre sprint, 1,600‑metre run, and shot put, while female candidates face an 800‑metre run, 100‑metre sprint, and shot put. Many candidates arrived as early as 4:00 a.m., demonstrating the seriousness and dedication of aspirants vying for these positions.
Entry procedures at the test centers are strictly managed to ensure fairness. Candidates undergo barcode scanning, followed by height and chest measurements. Once verified, eligible aspirants receive RFID tags and chest numbers to track performance throughout the physical tests. Those who fail to meet required benchmarks are disqualified immediately, adding pressure to the already competitive environment.
Additional Commissioner of Police Sarang Avhad emphasized that the recruitment process is being conducted with full transparency, with personnel deployed to maintain safety and order. Experts note that the large number of highly qualified applicants for entry-level constable roles highlights broader socioeconomic challenges, including limited opportunities in the private sector and the appeal of secure government employment.
“The significant number of engineers and MBAs applying for constable posts reflects a lack of sufficient opportunities in other industries,” explained employment analyst Dr. Meera Deshpande. “Government service offers reliability, benefits, and long-term security, which attracts even overqualified candidates.” Similar trends have been observed nationally, with highly educated professionals, including PhD holders, applying for lower-level government positions due to economic pressures and limited private-sector opportunities.

The recruitment drive also underscores employment challenges in Pune’s suburban and urban areas, where many degree holders struggle to find suitable jobs. With restricted hiring in industries and a competitive job market, public sector roles provide a pragmatic career option, even if the positions are not directly related to applicants’ academic qualifications.
As physical tests continue and selected candidates progress to the next stages, authorities remain committed to fair and merit-based evaluation. The outcome of this recruitment process will not only shape the composition of the Pimpri‑Chinchwad Police but also reflect the broader employment pressures affecting Pune’s youth and urban workforce.
