Authorities conduct joint survey at Bhumkar Chowk on Pune–Bengaluru Highway to tackle rising traffic congestion and improve road safety.
Pune | 23 March, 2026: In a significant step towards addressing one of Pune’s major traffic bottlenecks, authorities recently conducted a joint survey at Bhumkar Chowk on the busy Pune–Bengaluru Highway. The initiative involved officials from the traffic police, civic bodies, and highway authorities, aiming to identify practical solutions to ease congestion in the rapidly developing Wakad–Tathawade–Punawale belt.

Bhumkar Chowk has long been a critical congestion point due to heavy vehicular movement from multiple directions, including Hinjawadi IT Park, Wakad, and the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway corridor. With rapid urbanisation and increasing vehicle density, commuters often face severe delays during peak hours. Previous studies have already identified such junctions as traffic hotspots requiring urgent intervention.
During the survey, officials assessed traffic flow patterns, road width constraints, signal timing, and encroachments that contribute to daily bottlenecks. Authorities are reportedly considering measures such as improved lane discipline, redesigning junction layouts, optimizing traffic signal systems, and removing illegal encroachments to streamline movement.
The move comes amid growing concerns over both congestion and safety on this highway stretch. Past data has shown that areas like Bhumkar Chowk have witnessed multiple accidents due to high traffic volume, speeding, and poor traffic management, highlighting the urgency for corrective action.

Officials also explored long-term infrastructure solutions, including road widening, service road improvements, and better connectivity between internal roads and the highway. Similar proposals have been discussed earlier by civic authorities to upgrade surrounding roads and reduce pressure on key junctions like Bhumkar Chowk.
Commuters and local residents have welcomed the survey but emphasized the need for quick implementation rather than prolonged planning. Many daily travelers, especially IT professionals commuting to Hinjawadi, face extended travel times due to frequent traffic snarls in this corridor.
In conclusion, the joint survey at Bhumkar Chowk marks an important step towards addressing Pune’s growing traffic challenges. While identifying solutions is crucial, timely execution will determine whether commuters finally get relief from one of the city’s most congested junctions on the Pune–Bengaluru Highway.
