Pune From January to December 2025, Pune recorded the highest dengue and chikungunya cases in Maharashtra, with accurate testing ensuring early detection and minimal dengue-related fatalities in the city

Pune| February 23, 2026: Pune has emerged as the district with the highest number of dengue and chikungunya cases in Maharashtra during 2025, according to health authorities. From January to December, the state recorded 14,159 dengue cases and 3,439 chikungunya cases. Pune accounted for 44 dengue cases and 22 chikungunya cases, ranking just behind Dhule for dengue.

Dr. Aparna Patil, Pune’s District Malaria Officer, stated that Pune is the only district in Maharashtra where patient samples are directly sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) for testing. “This ensures highly accurate results and minimizes false negatives. Each sample is tested for both dengue and chikungunya viruses,” she explained.
Most patients affected are migrant laborers. Common symptoms include high fever, body rashes, and severe joint pain. While most patients recover with hydration and basic care, those with pre-existing conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure require hospitalization. Early detection and immediate treatment remain crucial, according to doctors.Statewide, dengue cases were highest in Dhule (58), Pune (44), Palghar (20), Latur (20), and Jalgaon (18). Chikungunya cases were predominantly reported in Pune (22), Palghar (18), Dhule (13), and Jalgaon (6). Despite Pune’s high case numbers, none of the 21 dengue-related deaths in the state occurred in the district.

Dr. Rajesh Dighe, Assistant Health Officer of Pune Municipal Corporation, noted a one-third decline in dengue cases compared to 2024. Persistent rains, stagnant water, and rapid urbanization are the primary contributors to mosquito-borne diseases, he added.
