Pune police register case after groom allegedly used fake age certificate for marriage. Investigation underway into forgery, accomplices, and legal implications.
Pune| December 24,2025: A marriage held in Pune has come under police scrutiny after it emerged that the groom allegedly used a forged age certificate to meet the legal requirement for marriage, prompting authorities to register a criminal case against him and an accomplice. The case was lodged at the Alandi Police Station following a complaint by the bride’s father, who discovered after the wedding that the groom had not completed the legally mandated age of 21 years at the time of marriage. According to the complaint, the accused deliberately submitted falsified documents, including a fake school leaving certificate and a manipulated Aadhaar card, to misrepresent his age and proceed with the wedding ceremony. The discrepancy surfaced when the bride’s family sought official verification of the documents, revealing inconsistencies that pointed to deliberate forgery rather than clerical error. Acting on the complaint, police registered offences under sections related to cheating, forgery, and the use of forged documents as genuine, and have begun a detailed investigation to determine how the fake certificates were prepared and whether any intermediaries or document forgers were involved. Legal experts note that under Indian law, the minimum age for marriage is 21 for men and 18 for women, and providing false age proof is a serious offence that can lead not only to criminal prosecution but also to the marriage being challenged or annulled in court. Officials say such cases highlight growing concerns over misuse of identity documents in sensitive legal processes, similar to verification failures seen in other sectors that rely heavily on documentation, from aviation operations involving major carriers like Air India and long-haul routes such as the Mumbai–London flight, to compliance checks tightened after major incidents like the Ahmedabad road accident. Police have cautioned that attempts to bypass marriage laws through forged records will be dealt with strictly, adding that stronger verification mechanisms are essential to prevent fraud, protect legal safeguards, and uphold the integrity of the marriage registration process.
