Pune Municipal Corporation cancels contracts and seizes deposits of parking lot contractors over charging citizens beyond fixed rates, following repeated notices and complaints about overpricing and poor management.
Pune | December 2, 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation has taken strict action against three parking lot contractors for overcharging citizens and failing to comply with regulations despite repeated warnings. Two contractors, operating parking lots at Hamalwada, Babu Genu, and Lakshmi Road, had their contracts cancelled and deposits seized, while punitive action was taken against a third contractor, said Dinkar Gojare, head of the project department.
The city has developed 30 parking lots, managed by contractors after competitive tenders. Parking lots are categorized into Zones A, B, and C, with fixed hourly rates to ensure affordability. For example, Zone A charges Rs 1 per hour for two-wheelers and Rs 7 for four-wheelers, while Zones B and C have slightly higher rates based on demand.

However, contractors were reportedly charging Rs 10 per hour for two-wheelers and Rs 50–80 for four-wheelers, providing receipts only when vehicles were parked and not upon exit. Drivers questioning the fees were often threatened, leading many to pay without protest.
Following media reports and multiple citizen complaints, the Municipal Corporation issued notices to the contractors. When no corrective action was taken, the authority acted decisively, seizing deposits and cancelling contracts to protect public interest.
The move signals Pune Municipal Corporation’s commitment to ensuring transparent, fair, and affordable parking services across the city.
