Pune introduces mandatory rules for demolishing old buildings, emphasizing safety, dust control, and informing authorities to prevent environmental hazards and past irregularities.
Pune | 03 February, 2026:Pune Municipal Corporation has issued new guidelines to regulate the demolition of old buildings and heritage wadas across the city. The rules aim to ensure safety, prevent environmental damage, and formalize demolition procedures that were previously prone to irregularities.

Under the new guidelines, demolitions must implement dust-control measures, including water sprinkling and the use of sprinklers. Authorities and nearby residents, as well as police and fire departments, must be informed in advance. Only after compliance with these safety measures and the issuance of a No Objection Certificate (NOC) by the concerned executive engineer can demolition proceed.
Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram instructed all 15 zonal offices of the PMC to strictly enforce the guidelines. The move is designed to prevent unsafe practices that were earlier influenced by political pressure or local gangs, ensuring demolitions are conducted responsibly.

Experts say the guidelines will not only protect the environment but also facilitate safer construction of new multi-story buildings on cleared plots. The initiative is being hailed by citizens and activists as a significant step toward urban planning reforms and sustainable development in Pune.
