Pune | 16 February, 2026- The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has unveiled an ambitious plan to upgrade 32 major roads across the city in a bid to significantly reduce traffic congestion, improve vehicular movement, and enhance commuter safety. With Pune’s rapid urban growth and rising vehicle population putting immense pressure on existing infrastructure, civic authorities are taking proactive steps to modernise key arterial and neighbourhood roads to meet current and future transport demands.

Under the proposed initiative, PMC engineers have identified 32 strategic road stretches that experience recurrent bottlenecks during peak hours. These roads connect major residential hubs to business districts, industrial zones, educational campuses, and key public facilities, making them critical for daily commuters. The upgrades will involve widening narrow stretches, repairing damaged pavements, strengthening road surfaces, improving drainage, and implementing better traffic management systems through smart signals and lane markings.

In addition to physical road improvements, PMC plans to install dedicated pedestrian crossings, footpaths, and bicycle tracks on select routes to enhance safety for non-motorised road users. Traffic signals at major intersections are also slated for upgrades with modern sensors to regulate vehicle flow based on real-time conditions. As part of the redesign process, engineers will also address problematic chokepoints near market areas and bus stops where unmanaged parking and mixed traffic frequently exacerbate congestion.

City planners cited rapid growth in vehicle numbers as a key reason for the initiative. Pune has seen a sharp rise in private vehicles, two-wheelers, and commercial traffic over the past decade, leading to frequent slowdowns and longer commute times on major corridors. Commuters have often voiced concerns over long traffic jams during office hours and evenings, particularly along roads connecting downtown Pune to suburban areas.

According to PMC officials, the project will be executed in phases to minimise travel disruptions. Priority will be given to roads where congestion costs commuters the most in terms of time lost and fuel consumption. The civic body has also said that works will be carried out with input from traffic police and local residents to ensure smooth execution and to address immediate challenges such as encroachments and drainage blockages.

One notable aspect of the plan is the integration of urban mobility solutions and intelligent transport system (ITS) features. Smart traffic signals, real-time traffic monitoring cameras, and variable message signs are expected to be installed at key junctions to help manage peak-time flows more efficiently. These technologies will provide traffic authorities with data to make timely decisions and optimise signal patterns for smoother movement.

The PMC’s initiative aligns with broader efforts to improve Pune’s urban transport ecosystem, which includes public bus services, proposed metro expansions, and traffic decongestion strategies. By enhancing key road networks, civic authorities aim to support economic activity, reduce travel stress for residents, and promote safer roads for all users.

While residents have welcomed the announcement, some have urged that construction timelines and alternate route plans be communicated transparently to prevent inconvenience during peak work phases. Local associations have also called for regular updates on progress, quality standards, and strict adherence to timelines, especially given the city’s fast-approaching festival and peak travel seasons.

Traffic experts note that upgrading infrastructure alone is not sufficient; long-term mobility planning that includes public transport enhancements, last-mile connectivity, and parking management strategies will be essential to sustain improvements in congestion relief. Nonetheless, the planned upgrades on 32 roads are seen as a positive step toward addressing Pune’s chronic traffic challenges.
