Ahead of the upcoming municipal elections, the work of Sulakshmi Hiramann Dhankawade has emerged as a prominent topic of discussion among local residents, social groups, and political observers. Her sustained efforts in women’s safety, youth development, fitness, and inclusive social initiatives have positioned her as a notable grassroots leader in the ward.

Dhankawade’s approach to empowerment begins with the belief that true empowerment is impossible without safety. In response to rising concerns over women’s security in Pune, the ‘Stri Shakti Helpline’ was launched as a concrete step towards providing immediate support and assistance to women in distress. The initiative was inaugurated on the occasion of the birth anniversaries of Rajmata Jijau and Swami Vivekananda, symbolising strength, courage, and social responsibility. The launch event saw the presence of prominent social and political figures, reinforcing the importance of collective action in addressing women’s safety.

The helpline initiative has been widely regarded as a meaningful intervention at the local level, offering women a sense of reassurance and a direct channel for help. Residents believe that such measures help build confidence among women and encourage them to speak up against injustice, thereby strengthening community trust.

Beyond safety, Dhankawade’s work through the Sai Fitness Club in Dhankawadi reflects her commitment to health-driven social transformation. As the club’s president, she has promoted the idea that physical fitness and discipline play a crucial role in shaping responsible individuals. Through gym training programmes, sports competitions, bodybuilding events, and health awareness drives, she has actively engaged youth and encouraged them to pursue positive lifestyles.

Local residents and parents credit these initiatives with helping many young people stay away from addiction and antisocial activities. The focus on fitness and sports has also created a sense of discipline, teamwork, and self-confidence among participants, reinforcing the social value of structured physical activity.

Her journey in social work has also brought her close to everyday challenges faced by women, youth, senior citizens, and marginalised groups. Dhankawade has often stated that these experiences made her realise the importance of being part of decision-making processes rather than limiting herself to social work alone. This understanding has led her to contest the municipal election from Ward 37, with the aim of representing citizens’ voices more effectively.

Social service initiatives under her leadership have extended to blood donation and environmental awareness. On November 4, 2025, a large blood donation camp was organised on the occasion of the birthday of Hiramann Hanumant Dhankawade, president of the Akhil Bharatiya Maratha Mahasangh Pune City Sports Committee. The camp saw participation from 170 blood donors, and each donor was gifted a Tulsi sapling, symbolising the message of environmental conservation alongside humanitarian service.

Dhankawade has also taken initiatives aimed at social inclusion. A chess tournament organised for persons with disabilities in 2022 attracted hundreds of players and spectators, promoting the message that individuals should be recognised for their abilities rather than limitations. This event was widely appreciated for encouraging dignity, confidence, and equal participation.
