PCMC intensifies action against banned plastic use in Pimpri-Chinchwad, collects ₹31,000 in fines during enforcement drive.

Pune | 23 March, 2026: In a continued push towards making the city cleaner and environmentally sustainable, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has intensified its crackdown on the use of banned plastic, collecting a total penalty of ₹31,000 from violators during a recent enforcement drive. The action was carried out by the civic body’s health department in areas under its jurisdiction, targeting both citizens and commercial establishments found violating plastic ban rules.

Officials stated that the अभियान focused on curbing the use of single-use plastic items, which remain a major contributor to urban pollution despite repeated warnings and regulations. During the drive, authorities not only imposed fines but also seized plastic materials from offenders. In one instance, a fine of ₹10,000 was levied on businesses in Indrayani Nagar, along with the confiscation of several kilograms of banned plastic. Additional penalties were imposed for related violations such as littering and improper waste disposal, further increasing the total collection.

The enforcement was conducted under the supervision of senior civic officials, including Deputy Commissioner Dr. Pradeep Thengal and Assistant Commissioner Kiran Kumar More, with on-ground teams led by health inspectors actively inspecting commercial areas and public spaces. The civic body has made it clear that such drives will continue across different wards to ensure strict compliance with environmental norms.

Authorities emphasized that eliminating single-use plastic is critical for reducing environmental damage, improving waste management, and safeguarding public health. Plastic waste, particularly non-biodegradable materials, often clogs drainage systems, pollutes water bodies, and contributes to long-term ecological harm. As a result, the PCMC has been consistently conducting surprise inspections and imposing penalties to deter violations.

Civic officials have also urged residents and business owners to cooperate by adopting eco-friendly alternatives and following waste segregation norms. They stressed that maintaining cleanliness and protecting the environment is a shared responsibility, and stricter action will be taken against repeat offenders.

In conclusion, the ₹31,000 penalty drive reflects PCMC’s firm stance on enforcing the plastic ban and improving urban hygiene. While enforcement actions are increasing, long-term success will depend on sustained public awareness and behavioral change towards responsible waste management.
