Pune Petrol Dealers Demand Tight Security After Repeated Assaults; Police Promise 24/7 Protection

Pune | November 22, 2025: Petrol pump owners in Pune have raised the alarm over the growing number of assaults on their staff, prompting a high‑level meeting with Pune’s top police brass. Dealers say that minor disputes over payment or delays are increasingly turning violent, especially late at night — so much so that they’re warning of shutting pumps after 7 PM if adequate protection is not provided.
According to the dealers’ association, they represent nearly 850 pump operators across Pune district. After a recent assault at a pump in Yerawada and another incident in Bhairoba Nullah, the association formally requested the police commissioner to step in. They demanded stronger security measures, arguing that the safety of their frontline employees — many of whom work 24/7 — is non-negotiable.
In response, the Police Commissioner has assured them that protecting petrol pump workers is a top priority. He promised strict and immediate action against anyone found attacking staff, and said enhanced policing measures will be put in place. A detailed coordination meeting with senior police officials has been scheduled to draw up a concrete, actionable security plan.
Dealers have made it clear that these attacks are not isolated. Their warning to shut pumps after 7 PM is a last-resort move to protect their people, many of whom feel vulnerable during night shifts. The association says it’s already escalated the issue to multiple authorities, demanding preventive patrols, better protection, and a safer work environment.
For the police, the message has been heard loud and clear. The promised round-the-clock protection — if implemented effectively — could not only help de-escalate tensions but also restore a sense of security for petrol pump workers across the city.
