Pune Police detain four men for assault and extortion of ₹25,000 from a passenger to fund a birthday celebration; auto-rickshaw used in crime seized, ₹10,000 recovered.
Pune, March 3, 2026:In a swift action, the Pune City Police’s Detection Branch (DB) arrested four men believed to have assaulted and extorted ₹25,000 from a traveller in an auto-rickshaw under the bizarre pretext of financing a birthday celebration. The case highlights an unusual but violent form of street crime in the city, raising concerns about public safety and rising audacity among local offenders.
The incident came to light after a complaint was lodged by a resident of Jahangirpur village in Bihar’s Saran district. The complainant reported that his friend was travelling in an auto-rickshaw in Pune when four unidentified men allegedly beat the victim and threatened him with death if he did not pay up. The assailants then demanded ₹25,000 and forced the victim’s wife to transfer the amount online after the man refused to comply directly.

The complainant claimed the assault took place while his friend was on his way to Pune Railway Station, making the incident particularly alarming given the public setting. Such instances of violent extortion not only jeopardize individual safety but also undermine confidence in commuter security in busy city zones.
Following the complaint, an FIR (No. 40/2026) was registered at the Bundgarden Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including provisions pertaining to attempted culpable homicide and extortion.
Acting on technical intelligence and CCTV footage, the Detection Branch traced the suspects to the Gultekdi area of Pune. On February 25, officers detained Ganesh Anna Jagdhane (29) and Amol Uttam Gaikwad (32), both residents of Dias Plot Canal in Gultekdi. During interrogation, the duo reportedly confessed to the crime and revealed information about their accomplices.
Based on these statements, police arrested Atul Ravindra Gaikwad (38) and Santosh Radhakishan Sarode (31) on February 27. All four accused are residents of the same locality in Gultekdi.
Senior inspector Santosh Pandhare led the investigation, working under guidance from Additional Commissioner of Police (East Region) Manoj Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 5) Rajalakshmi Shivankar, and ACP (Lashkar Division) Sangita Alphonso Shinde. The coordinated effort underscored Pune Police’s commitment to tackling street crime and protecting commuters.
Police seized the auto-rickshaw used in the crime as crucial physical evidence. Additionally, investigators successfully recovered ₹10,000 of the extorted amount, though ₹15,000 remains unaccounted for as the probe continues.
“The use of the auto-rickshaw facilitated mobility for the suspects and allowed them to target unsuspecting victims,” a police official said. “Seizing the vehicle will assist future investigation into whether the same vehicle was used in other similar cases.”
While extortion and roadside robbery aren’t new challenges for Pune’s law enforcement, the involvement of multiple suspects and the pretense of a birthday celebration mark a departure from typical street crimes. In the past year, Pune has seen a variety of criminal activities ranging from kidnapping operations to online scams and fraudulent impersonations, but violent extortion in transit spaces remains a particularly worrying trend.Experts say such incidents often occur when offenders sense minimal risk of detection and prosecution. Quick and coordinated responses by police, paired with better surveillance, can act as deterrents. CCTV coverage, in particular, played a key role in this case by helping authorities track movements and identify perpetrators.
Pune Police officials stress that commuters should remain vigilant, particularly in crowded transport hubs like railway stations, bus stops, and transit points. They recommend reporting suspicious behaviour immediately via the city control room or nearest police station. The Pune City Police has also urged citizens to use digital payment safeguards to prevent unauthorized transfers in coercive situations.
Local resident groups have welcomed the arrests but called for continued focus on crime prevention, including lighting improvements in darker streets, increased patrolling during peak travel hours, and community policing efforts.
