Pune Police bar protests outside political party offices and leaders’ residences to curb clashes after violent BJP–Congress protests; strict orders issued.

Pune | 16 February, 2026- In a decisive move to maintain public order, Pune Police have announced a ban on protests and demonstrations outside political party offices and the residences of political leaders. The directive comes after recent violent clashes between workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress, which escalated into stone-pelting and injuries in the city.

The recent confrontation occurred when BJP workers staged a protest outside a Congress office over controversial remarks made by a senior leader. The demonstration quickly turned violent as supporters of both parties clashed near the office, leading to damage to property and injuries to participants, including police personnel. In response, police registered cases against several individuals from both parties for unlawful assembly and violent conduct.

Authorities clarified that the ban is intended to prevent further escalation and protect both residents and political figures. Police have warned that anyone violating the restrictions will face legal action under public order laws. The directive specifically targets high-risk areas prone to confrontation, allowing demonstrations only in designated, safer zones.

While the ban does not restrict peaceful expression of opinions in general, it addresses concerns that protests outside party offices and leaders’ homes often escalate quickly. Police officials highlighted that the city needs preemptive measures to prevent disturbances, especially in areas with high political activity.

The clashes have highlighted the challenges authorities face during periods of heightened political tension. Law enforcement emphasized the importance of dialogue through formal channels rather than street protests, urging political parties to avoid inflammatory rhetoric. Residents welcomed the move, citing that recent confrontations had disrupted daily life and threatened public safety.

Political analysts have noted that while the ban may restrict certain protest activities, it is a temporary measure aimed at ensuring safety and preventing further violence. Opposition figures have expressed concerns over potential misuse of the order but acknowledge that maintaining public order is a legitimate concern.

Police also appealed to civil society groups and citizens to cooperate by refraining from demonstrations in restricted areas, emphasizing that maintaining law and order is a priority for the city administration. Authorities plan to continue monitoring the situation closely to avoid recurrence of violent incidents.
