The police in Shikrapur, Pune district, have arrested three suspects in a disturbing extortion case involving a school-boy who was lured via an online game promise and forced to hand over jewellery and cash. The accused allegedly convinced the minor to steal valuables from his home and deliver them as part of the gaming trap. The case raises alarm about how online gaming platforms can be misused to exploit vulnerable children and their families.

According to the complaint, a nineth-standard student of a local school in Shikrapur was contacted on a gaming app by the principal accused, Mayur alias Shashikant Munjaji Bhisad (21), a resident of Parbhani. Bhisad promised the boy a gaming ID or other perks in return for transferring money or valuables. Gradually he pressured the boy into taking gold jewellery and cash from his house and handing them over. When the loss of valuables was discovered by the boy’s father, who runs a shop in Shikrapur, the matter was reported to the police on October 10.

The police investigation—led by the Pune Rural Police and local Shikrapur team—tracked phone records, digital transactions, and communication logs. These revealed that Bhisad orchestrated the extortion from Parbhani, and travelled to Pune to collect the stolen items. A second accused, Kishor Dahale (22), was found to have purchased the jewellery. The cash and jewellery handed over to the gang were estimated at Rs 3.5 lakh. Bhisad was arrested in Parbhani on October 19, and Dahale was also taken into custody. Investigations continue to identify any further accomplices.

Police say the method used by the gang is especially troubling: by using an online gaming platform, they targeted a minor, created trust, then invoked fear and manipulation to gain valuables. The boy, presumably afraid of losing gaming privileges and disappointed by unfulfilled promises, complied. The incident highlights the intersection of online gaming addiction, digital vulnerability of minors, and organised extortion.

Authorities are urging parents and guardians to monitor children’s gaming and social-media activity, especially when contact is initiated by strangers offering rewards or benefits. They warn that such promises may mask a trap aimed at exploitation. The police also recommend that households secure high-value items and track any unusual behaviour in children.

The Shikrapur Police’s quick action and coordination with Pune Rural Crime Unit have drawn commendations. The success has sent a wider message that even seemingly innocuous online gaming approaches could lead to criminal exploitation. Investigation is ongoing to find whether this gang has targeted other minors, and whether they operated across multiple districts.

This case underscores the importance of digital literacy and awareness about the risks of online platforms, especially for young users. Simultaneously, it stresses the need for law‐enforcement agencies to stay alert to evolving patterns of crime that combine technology, manipulation and traditional theft.
