Pune | 18 March, 2026: Residents across Pune have reported a noticeable rise in monkey sightings within city limits, prompting growing concern over safety, property damage, and potential human-wildlife conflict. Citizens from several localities have urged the forest department to intervene immediately, as frequent encounters with monkeys are beginning to disrupt daily life.

According to local complaints, groups of monkeys have been spotted in residential neighborhoods, on rooftops, and even inside housing societies. Residents say the animals are not only creating panic but are also damaging property, snatching food items, and in some cases displaying aggressive behavior. Many families, especially those with children and elderly members, have expressed fear over stepping outdoors due to the unpredictability of these encounters.

Experts suggest that such incidents are often linked to rapid urban expansion and shrinking natural habitats. As Pune continues to grow, green cover and forested areas are increasingly being replaced by construction, forcing wildlife like monkeys to venture into urban zones in search of food and shelter. Easy availability of food waste and deliberate feeding by humans further encourages monkeys to return to residential areas.

Environmentalists warn that the situation could escalate if not addressed promptly. Human-monkey conflicts have been reported in multiple Indian cities, and authorities have often had to step in with capture and relocation drives. In fact, forest departments in various regions have implemented measures such as installing cages, conducting rescue operations, and relocating monkeys far from human settlements to mitigate such conflicts.

Residents in Pune are now demanding similar action, including deployment of trained rescue teams, stricter monitoring, and awareness campaigns discouraging people from feeding monkeys. Many believe that without immediate intervention, the number of sightings—and risks—will continue to increase.

Forest officials have acknowledged that urban wildlife movement is not uncommon, especially in cities surrounded by hills and forest patches like Pune. However, they have urged citizens to remain cautious, avoid feeding animals, and report sightings promptly to authorities.

The issue also highlights a broader environmental challenge—balancing urban development with ecological preservation. As cities expand, encounters between humans and wildlife are becoming more frequent, underscoring the need for sustainable planning and proactive wildlife management strategies.
