Pune | 17 March, 2026: In Pune, the Republican Party of India (Athawale) has put forward a significant demand to establish a grand memorial and statue of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar at Chandni Chowk, a major entry point to the city. Party leaders have approached the civic administration, highlighting that the location holds strategic and symbolic importance due to its connectivity and ongoing infrastructure upgrades. They argued that as Chandni Chowk is rapidly transforming into a key urban junction with improved road networks and proposed metro connectivity, it is an ideal place to install a landmark that reflects the ideals of equality, justice, and social reform associated with Dr Ambedkar. According to party representatives, Pune, known as an educational and cultural hub, should prominently showcase national icons who have shaped the country’s democratic values, and a memorial at such a high-visibility location would inspire citizens and visitors alike.

The demand also comes in the backdrop of increasing efforts across India to commemorate influential leaders in public spaces, especially in rapidly developing cities where cultural identity often blends with modern infrastructure. Leaders from RPI (A) emphasized that Dr Ambedkar’s role in drafting the Indian Constitution and advocating for the rights of marginalized communities makes him a figure of immense national importance whose legacy should be visibly honored. While the Pune Municipal Corporation has not yet issued an official response, sources suggest that such proposals are typically evaluated based on feasibility, land availability, and alignment with urban planning guidelines. Civic experts believe that if approved, the memorial could emerge as a prominent landmark, enhancing both the cultural and civic landscape of the city.
