Pune RTO Launches Simplified Online System for Paying Traffic Fines via UPI and Digital Wallets
Pune RTO introduces streamlined online payment option for traffic fines—drivers can now settle challans using UPI or digital wallets without needing a debit/credit card.
Pune, October 31, 2025: In a move aimed at making traffic-fine payment easier and more user-friendly, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Pune has introduced a new system that allows motorists to settle challans through UPI apps and digital wallets, eliminating the need for a debit or credit card. The updated process was announced by authorities as a step towards faster, more transparent traffic-management services.
According to officials, the new arrangement includes deployment of “flying squad” teams equipped with handheld devices, enabling on-spot generation of e-challans and immediate payment through mobile phones. This is part of an effort to digitise operations across the traffic-enforcement chain and reduce administrative bottlenecks. The system ensures that even motorists who do not carry a card can pay their fines promptly via UPI links, thereby avoiding additional delays or penalties.
Motorists will now receive an SMS or notification following a traffic violation; embedded within is a link that directs them to a payment gateway accepting major UPI apps, e-wallets or internet-banking options. Once the payment is completed, a digital receipt is generated instantly and the vehicle’s record is updated in the national e-challan repository. This streamlines the process of checking and clearing fines, which earlier required either visiting the traffic office or using card-based payment terminals.
Authorities say the benefits of this system extend beyond convenience — by reducing physical cash transactions or manual card-swipe processes, the system enhances transparency and reduces opportunities for inefficiency or error. It also speeds up compliance by drivers: since the payment can be made on the spot or shortly afterwards via mobile, fines are likely to be settled sooner, which the RTO argues will lead to safer roads through improved enforcement.
The platform integrates with the national “e-challan” portals and the state traffic police system, enabling motorists to check pending fines, pay them online and obtain receipts—all without having to visit an RTO branch. This is directly aligned with the push for digital governance and citizen-friendly services, particularly in urban regions with heavy traffic volumes like Pune.
While the new system is live, authorities urge motorists to ensure that their vehicle registration, ownership and contact information are updated and that their mobile number is linked to the vehicle record, since SMS alerts and payment links depend on correct data. Training will also be provided for traffic personnel, including the new flying squads, so that on-the-spot fine issuance and payment become seamless.
