Pune | November 24, 2025: Pune authorities have announced a sharp reduction in the speed limit on the high-risk Katraj–Navale stretch, fixing the maximum allowed speed at 30 kmph in an effort to curb frequent and serious accidents. The new rule comes into effect immediately, while automated CCTV-based enforcement will begin from November 25. The decision follows a detailed review of accident data, revealing that overspeeding continues to be the single biggest trigger for collisions on this corridor.
The Katraj–Navale stretch has long been known as one of Pune’s accident-prone zones, especially during peak traffic hours and nighttime movement of heavy vehicles. Authorities have repeatedly flagged issues such as uncontrolled speeding, violations by trucks, blind curves, and inconsistent road discipline. With festival-season traffic expected to rise, the administration has opted for a stricter regulatory framework.
Under the new mechanism, high-definition CCTV cameras installed along the route will automatically capture speed violations. The footage will be directly linked to the traffic penalty system, enabling e-challans without any manual intervention. According to officials, this technology-based enforcement aims to reduce human error, increase transparency, and ensure that habitual violators face consistent penalties.
In the past year, this road has witnessed several fatal accidents, many involving two-wheelers, small cars, and heavy commercial vehicles. Residents and daily commuters have repeatedly demanded stronger enforcement, citing that reckless speeding has made the stretch unsafe even during daytime. The introduction of a 30 kmph speed cap reflects an urgent need to restore discipline and safety, especially near junctions, slopes, service lanes, and merging traffic points.
Officials have also clarified that the reduced speed limit applies to all vehicle categories without exception. Warning boards and reflective signages are being placed in phases to alert drivers well in advance. Traffic teams will conduct spot inspections, especially during nighttime, to ensure that drivers comply with the new norms before automated fines begin.
The authorities believe that the combined effect of speed reduction and AI-powered monitoring will significantly cut down crash rates. If the model proves successful, similar enforcement may be extended to other high-risk stretches in the city. Given Pune’s rapidly growing traffic load, such interventions—alongside the expansion of expressways, stricter lane discipline, and better road engineering—are expected to shape long-term road safety strategies.
The implementation comes at a time when national discussions around transport safety have intensified. Recent incidents across Indian highways—including the Ahmedabad road accident and safety concerns amid the West Asia crisis impacting movement and logistics—have pushed the need for modernized enforcement systems. The developments coincide with several other ongoing updates in the transport ecosystem, including airport-level alerts such as those involving Air India’s Mumbai–London route and geopolitical tensions involving Iran and Israel affecting global safety protocols.
As Pune continues to expand, authorities stress that safety must be prioritised alongside mobility. With the Katraj–Navale route finally coming under tighter regulation, residents hope the move will mark a turning point in reducing accidents and creating a safer urban travel environment.
