Pune teen injured after accidental firing in Mundhwa as youths mishandle illegal pistol; police arrest three and detain minor.

Pune | 23 March, 2026: A disturbing incident in Pune’s Mundhwa area has once again highlighted the dangers of illegal firearms and reckless behavior among youths. A 17-year-old boy was seriously injured after a country-made pistol accidentally discharged while a group of youngsters were allegedly “playing” with the weapon late in the evening. The incident took place around 9:30 pm on March 18 near Gurukrupa Society in Keshav Nagar, turning what appeared to be a casual gathering into a life-threatening situation.

According to police officials, one of the youths had brought the illegal firearm to the meeting spot. What began as careless handling and imitation of firing actions quickly escalated when the trigger was pulled, causing a bullet to be fired. The bullet struck the teenage boy in the abdomen, leaving him critically injured. He was initially rushed to a nearby private hospital and later shifted to Sassoon General Hospital, where doctors have confirmed that his condition is now stable.

Following the incident, Pune Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) based on the victim’s complaint. Authorities have arrested three individuals identified as Saksham Yuvraj Gaikwad (19), Om Durga Gaikwad (19), and Sonu alias Sumit Barnwal (21). A fourth accused, who is a minor, has been detained and sent to an observation home as per legal procedure. The accused have been booked under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant provisions of the Indian Arms Act, including charges related to negligent acts endangering human life.

Investigators revealed that the firearm was likely procured illegally, although the accused have offered conflicting statements, claiming they found the pistol at the location. Police officials have expressed skepticism about this claim and are probing the origin of the weapon. Efforts are underway to recover the firearm and trace its supply chain, which could expose a larger illegal arms network operating in and around Pune.

Senior police officers, including Deputy Commissioner Rajkumar Shinde and Assistant Commissioner Atulkumar Navgire, visited the scene shortly after the incident. Assistant Police Inspector Ganesh Pinguwale, who is leading the investigation, confirmed that the arrested accused have been remanded to police custody for further questioning. Officials also noted that the accused individuals have prior criminal records and are school dropouts, raising concerns about youth delinquency and lack of supervision.

Another alarming aspect of the case is the delay in reporting. Authorities pointed out that neither the private hospital nor Sassoon General Hospital immediately informed the police through a medico-legal report, which slowed down the initial response. This delay, combined with the relatively isolated location of the incident, may have hindered timely investigation and intervention.

The incident has sparked wider concerns about the increasing availability of illegal country-made weapons and their misuse among young individuals. Law enforcement agencies have previously cracked down on illegal firearm manufacturing units supplying such weapons to cities like Pune, but the persistence of such cases indicates deeper systemic issues.

Experts warn that easy access to illegal arms, combined with reckless behavior, can lead to tragic consequences. Similar to other incidents across India—from urban mishaps like the Ahmedabad road accident to broader disruptions influenced by global tensions such as the West Asia crisis involving Iran and Israel—this case reflects the urgent need for stronger enforcement, awareness, and preventive measures.

In conclusion, the Mundhwa firing incident serves as a stark reminder of how negligence and illegal activities can quickly spiral into life-threatening situations. While the injured teen is recovering, the case underscores the importance of strict action against illegal arms circulation and the need for greater awareness among youth. Authorities are continuing their investigation, and further developments are expected as police work to uncover the source of the weapon and prevent similar incidents in the future.
