Pune | 12 March, 2026: Pune will host a free bone marrow cross-matching camp for children suffering from thalassaemia at the District Hospital in Aundh on March 13, in an effort to help families explore treatment options and spread awareness about the hereditary blood disorder. The camp is part of a larger initiative titled “One Step Towards Thalassaemia Liberation,” which focuses on improving access to medical guidance and identifying potential bone marrow donors for children diagnosed with the condition.
Health officials said the camp will offer specialised bone marrow compatibility testing along with expert counselling for children and their families. Cross-matching tests are essential before a bone marrow transplant can be considered, as doctors must determine whether parents or siblings are suitable donors. By providing these tests free of cost, authorities aim to remove a major financial burden that often discourages families from beginning the transplant evaluation process.

In private diagnostic laboratories, bone marrow cross-matching and HLA typing tests can cost anywhere between ₹2,000 and ₹15,000 depending on the complexity of the procedure. For families already coping with the continuous cost of treatment, these additional expenses can be difficult to manage. Organisers believe that offering the service free of charge will encourage more families to undergo testing and move closer to possible curative treatment.
Thalassaemia is a serious genetic blood disorder in which the body produces abnormal haemoglobin, leading to severe anaemia and other complications. Children diagnosed with the condition often require lifelong care that includes regular blood transfusions, medication, and constant medical monitoring. Many families spend a significant portion of their income managing the disease and ensuring their child receives timely treatment.
Medical experts say bone marrow transplantation remains the only permanent cure for thalassaemia. However, the procedure itself is complex and expensive, with costs often ranging between ₹10 lakh and ₹50 lakh depending on the type of transplant and hospital facilities involved. Before a transplant can take place, compatibility testing between the patient and potential donors must be completed, which makes cross-matching camps a critical step in identifying suitable donors within the family.

Specialist doctors are expected to provide guidance to parents during the camp and explain the transplant process, treatment options, and long-term care requirements. Medical professionals will also conduct counselling sessions to help families better understand the disease and the importance of early intervention.
Officials involved in the initiative said similar camps organised in the past have helped hundreds of families take the first step toward treatment. More than 1,500 families have benefited from free bone marrow cross-matching tests conducted through several such camps, and over 90 children from different parts of Maharashtra and other states have successfully undergone bone marrow transplants following these initiatives.
The broader campaign was launched with the aim of not only assisting children already diagnosed with thalassaemia but also preventing new cases through increased screening and awareness. Health authorities emphasise that testing among newly married couples and pregnant women can help detect the disorder early and reduce the chances of children being born with the condition.
Authorities have urged parents of children diagnosed with thalassaemia to participate in the camp and consult specialists about treatment possibilities. Early testing and proper medical guidance can play a vital role in improving outcomes and offering affected children a chance at a healthier future.
