Pune Witnesses Rare Interfaith Iftar as Warkari Devotees and Muslim Community Gather at Sadal Baba Dargah

Warkari devotees and Muslims gathered for an interfaith Iftar at Sadal Baba Dargah in Pune, highlighting communal harmony, unity, and shared cultural traditions.

Pune | 12 March, 2026: Pune once again showcased its tradition of communal harmony during the holy month of Ramzan when members of the Warkari community joined the Muslim community for a special interfaith Iftar gathering at the historic Sadal Baba Dargah in Yerawada. The event brought together people from different faiths, professions, and backgrounds who sat together to break the fast after sunset, reinforcing the message of unity and mutual respect. Organised by the Sarva Dharma Sambhav Trust, the initiative aimed to create a space where communities could connect beyond religious identities and strengthen social bonds through dialogue and shared traditions. The gathering was led by social worker and professional golfer Ikram Khan, who has been actively involved in organising similar interfaith programmes to promote harmony and understanding in society.

What made the event unique was the participation of devotees from the Warkari Sampradaya, a prominent Hindu devotional tradition in Maharashtra known for its devotion to Lord Vitthal and the annual pilgrimage to Pandharpur. Members of the Warkari community attended the programme and participated in devotional bhajans before the evening prayers and Iftar. The presence of both devotional singing and Islamic prayer at the same venue created a symbolic moment that reflected the shared spiritual values of compassion, faith, and togetherness. The Sadal Baba Dargah has long been known as a place visited by people from different religions who come to offer prayers and seek blessings, making it a fitting location for such an interfaith gathering.

Several prominent citizens and officials also attended the programme, including senior police officers, social activists, and representatives from various fields such as sports, education, and business. Speakers at the gathering emphasised that initiatives like these play an important role in strengthening social harmony in a diverse city like Pune. They noted that when people from different communities interact directly and share experiences, it helps break stereotypes and reduce misunderstandings that sometimes arise due to social or political differences.

In Islam, Iftar marks the breaking of the daily fast during Ramzan after sunset, traditionally beginning with dates and water before a meal is shared with family and the community. Over time, community Iftar events in India have evolved into platforms for interfaith interaction where people of different religions are invited to participate. Many attendees at the Pune event said that sharing a meal together creates a simple yet powerful opportunity to build trust and understanding among communities.

Pune has historically been known for its culture of coexistence and interfaith engagement. In many parts of the city, residents celebrate festivals across religions, from Ganeshotsav and Ashadhi Wari traditions to Eid celebrations. Community leaders believe that such events are particularly meaningful today, as they remind people that respect for diversity remains one of India’s strongest social foundations. The organisers of the event also said they plan to continue hosting similar programmes in the future, including community meals and cultural initiatives that encourage dialogue between communities.

The interfaith Iftar at Sadal Baba Dargah ultimately served as a reminder that shared human values can bridge religious differences. As Warkari devotees and members of the Muslim community sat together to break the fast, the gathering reflected Pune’s enduring spirit of harmony and the belief that unity and compassion remain central to the city’s social fabric.
