Push Grows to Implement Solapur’s DJ‑Free City Model Across Maharashtra

Lawmakers in the Maharashtra legislature are pushing to adopt Solapur’s successful DJ‑free city approach statewide, aiming to reduce noise pollution and protect public health during festivals and public events.
Nagpur | December 15, 2025:Momentum is building in the Maharashtra legislature to replicate Solapur’s DJ‑free city model across the state. The demand came up during the winter session of the State Legislative Council, where members highlighted the adverse impact of high‑decibel DJ use on community health and daily life.

Solapur’s approach has drawn widespread attention for banning the use of DJs during religious functions and public events and instead promoting traditional instruments and cultural sounds. Lawmakers pointed out that the city’s model has helped reduce noise pollution, especially benefiting senior citizens, patients, students, and families who have long complained about the disruptive effects of loud music
BJP MLC Shrikant Bharatiya raised the issue through a calling attention motion, urging that the successful practices from Solapur be adopted state‑wide. He emphasized that sound pollution from unchecked DJ use not only disturbs people but also poses direct health risks.

Responding to the debate, Environment Minister Pankaja Munde acknowledged the problem of noise pollution and confirmed that playing DJs beyond permissible sound limits or after 10 pm is already illegal. However, she noted that enforcement primarily lies with the police, and active public participation is essential to curb violations.
Some council members also called for a permanent ban on DJ use in public celebrations statewide, saying citizens and local representatives must work together to raise awareness and support traditional cultural expressions. The minister stressed that the success of such a model depends on voluntary adoption and community cooperation rather than forced regulations.
As discussions continue, the push to expand Solapur’s DJ‑free example reflects wider concern about quality of life, public health, and cultural preservation in Maharashtra’s towns and cities.
