Historian Raj Chaudhary emphasises that experiencing historic forts is crucial to comprehending the life and legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, marking a shift from theoretical study to immersive heritage journeys.
Kolhapur | November 13, 2025: In a move aimed at deepening public engagement with Maratha history, noted historian and educator Raj Chaudhary has called on learners and heritage enthusiasts to step beyond textbooks and explore Maharashtra’s forts firsthand. Speaking at an event in Kolhapur, he said the study of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his era must begin with “experiencing the terrain, the walls and the paths” of the forts he built or captured.
“Books tell you the dates,” Chaudhary remarked, “but it is walking the ramparts, climbing the bastions and feeling the breeze on those heights that truly connects you with Shivaji’s vision.” He advocated guided trail tours to key hill forts and coastal forts as part of his proposed “Shiv Charitra Awareness Walks.”
Fortresses like Rajgad Fort, Torna Fort and Sindhudurg Fort were cited by Chaudhary as ideal ‘live classrooms’ where students of history, strategy and architecture can gain insight into Shivaji’s military innovation and statecraft. He suggested combining visits with talks on construction techniques, water-management, and defendability, making the heritage experience multidimensional.

Local heritage groups welcomed the initiative, saying it would help attract younger generations and enhance awareness of Maharashtra’s fort-rich landscape. They expect an increase in educational tourism and hope local administrations will improve trail safety, signage and interpretive centres.
A short-term pilot of the programme is planned for early 2026, with visits to selected forts supplemented by workshops. Raj Chaudhary reiterated: “Understanding Shivcharitra begins when you leave the classroom and walk along the same stone steps that Shivaji’s troops once marched.”
