April 6, 2026 | Mumbai Political tensions are rising within Maharashtra’s opposition alliance as divisions have emerged in the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction) over extending support to Sunetra Pawar in the upcoming Baramati bypoll. The by-election has been necessitated following the demise of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, leaving the Baramati Assembly seat vacant. While the ruling alliance has fielded Sunetra Pawar as its candidate, the Maha Vikas Aghadi appears divided on its strategy.

Sources indicate that during a meeting at ‘Matoshree’, leaders within the Thackeray faction expressed differing views. One group has advocated supporting Sunetra Pawar, citing political convention and past personal ties between Uddhav Thackeray and Ajit Pawar. They argue that bypolls held after a leader’s death are often left uncontested as a mark of respect. However, another faction within the party has opposed this stance, questioning why they should back a candidate aligned with the ruling coalition. They fear that stepping aside could weaken the party’s cadre and political positioning.

The situation has been further complicated by the Indian National Congress, which has indicated its intent to contest the election independently, potentially disrupting opposition unity. This divergence has created a significant dilemma within the alliance, raising concerns over coordination in both Baramati and Rahuri constituencies. Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has appealed to all parties to support Sunetra Pawar and ensure an uncontested election, citing political tradition in such circumstances.

Reacting to the developments, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut emphasized that discussions are ongoing within the alliance. He stated that while there is sympathy following Ajit Pawar’s demise, avoiding an election altogether would be unfair to voters dissatisfied with the government. As Sunetra Pawar prepares to file her nomination, all eyes are on Uddhav Thackeray’s final decision, which is expected to shape the future dynamics of the opposition bloc in Maharashtra.
