March 21 | Mumbai In a significant political development, Rupali Chakankar has resigned from her post as Chairperson of the Maharashtra State Women’s Commission after reportedly being directed to do so by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The resignation comes in the backdrop of mounting controversy surrounding the Ashok Kharat case and rising political pressure.

According to sources, Chakankar met Chief Minister Fadnavis on Saturday evening, where she was asked to step down from her position. Following the meeting, she proceeded to the ‘Devgiri’ residence to meet Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar. After discussions there, Chakankar formally submitted her resignation to Pawar. She has also stepped down from her role as the women’s state president of the Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction).

The controversy intensified after Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sushma Andhare levelled serious allegations against Chakankar, including claims linked to alleged superstitious practices. The accusations were accompanied by the circulation of old photographs, further fuelling political debate. The resignation is also connected to the high-profile case involving self-styled astrologer Ashok Kharat, who has been arrested on charges of sexual assault. The case is being described by sources as one of the largest sex scandals in Maharashtra, with claims that several political figures may have had links with the suspect.

Chief Minister Fadnavis has reportedly taken a firm stand, directing authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter, even as reports suggest that some individuals within the ruling alliance could come under scrutiny. Allegations have also surfaced regarding Kharat’s access to influential political circles, including arrangements made for his stay in luxury hotels. Investigators have reportedly seized over 100 videos and uncovered benami assets worth approximately ₹500 crore, indicating the масштаб and seriousness of the case. Authorities are now working to trace the full extent of the network and bring those involved to justice
