Russia Moves to Halt Gasoline Exports from April 1 Amid Global Energy Turmoil

Russia has announced a temporary ban on gasoline exports starting April 1 to stabilise domestic fuel prices and ensure adequate supplies as global markets face volatility due to the ongoing US-Iran conflict.

March 28, 2026 | Moscow Russia will suspend gasoline exports from April 1 in a strategic move aimed at protecting domestic fuel supplies and containing rising prices amid heightened global energy uncertainty linked to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran. The decision was taken following a high-level government review of the domestic fuel market, led by Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak. Officials indicated that the export ban is intended to prioritise internal consumption and prevent fuel prices from exceeding projected levels, a key directive set by President Vladimir Putin.

Authorities noted that volatility in global oil and petroleum product prices has intensified due to the geopolitical crisis in the Middle East. Despite strong international demand for Russian energy, the government has chosen to intervene in order to maintain stability within its domestic market. According to Russia’s Energy Ministry, refinery output remains consistent with last year’s levels, ensuring sufficient production capacity. Officials also confirmed that domestic reserves of gasoline and diesel are adequate, with high utilisation rates across refineries supporting continued supply.

The export suspension is expected to be temporary and forms part of broader efforts by Moscow to cushion its economy from external shocks while managing internal fuel availability. Similar restrictions have been implemented in the past to address shortages and curb price surges, particularly during periods of market disruption and increased seasonal demand. The move comes at a time when global oil markets are under strain due to supply disruptions and rising prices linked to the Middle East conflict, further underscoring Russia’s focus on safeguarding its domestic energy stability.
