Sangli District Completes Sugarcane Plantation on Over 33,000 Hectares Despite Heavy Rains

Despite continuous rainfall and waterlogging, farmers in Sangli district succeeded in planting sugarcane on 33,310 hectares this season  a major milestone for 2025 adsali cultivation.

Sangli|06 December 2025:Farmers across Sangli district have pushed ahead with sugarcane plantation this year, completing sowing on 33,310 hectares, in spite of repeated rainfall and challenging field conditions. The unusually persistent rains had raised concerns of waterlogging and delays in the adsali sugarcane season, but farmers persevered.

The sowing activity began earlier in the monsoon-affected months by re-orienting plans: several talukas  including Walwa, Khanapur, Tasgaon, Palus, Kadegaon, and Jat  replanned their cropping schedules to avoid water stagnation, with many switching to early or later-harvest sowings instead of traditional adsali timing.

Officials from the agriculture department note that though the rainy start caused a temporary lag  especially in September renewed dry periods allowed farmers to resume work. By early December, the total area planted surpassed 33,000 hectares.

The shift in sowing patterns has somewhat changed the cropping rhythm of the district: while adsali-season planting has reduced compared to previous years, the “pre-season” and “surū/early-season” plantings have increased. This flexibility helped avoid larger losses.

Local sugar factories are gearing up: with planting numbers up, mills expect a healthy inflow for the upcoming crushing season. Reports suggest that out of the district’s sugar mills, many have already started preparing for harvest and logistics.

Farmers and officials alike hope that this resilient response will translate into a stable sugarcane yield  and adequate returns  when the crop comes to harvest next season.
