March 9, 2026 | Pune : Scientists have developed a breakthrough technology that can detect human movement inside rooms using ordinary Wi-Fi signals, eliminating the need for cameras or wearable devices. The innovation relies on artificial intelligence to analyse how wireless signals interact with human bodies and surrounding objects.

The system works by studying subtle changes in Wi-Fi signals as they bounce off walls, furniture and people inside a space. When a person moves, sits, walks or even breathes, the wireless signals are slightly distorted. Specialised algorithms analyse these variations and convert them into motion patterns that can identify human presence and activity. During experiments, researchers demonstrated that the technology can generate simplified three-dimensional silhouettes representing people moving inside a room, even when they are not directly visible. The system is capable of detecting multiple individuals at once and identifying basic actions such as standing, walking or sitting.

One major advantage of the technology is that it does not require expensive equipment. Since it can operate using standard Wi-Fi routers and software-based analysis, it could potentially be integrated into existing wireless networks in homes, offices and public buildings. Researchers believe the innovation could play a valuable role in healthcare and emergency response. For example, it could help monitor elderly individuals living alone by detecting inactivity or sudden falls.
