Senior Citizen Loses ₹21.64 Lakh in Cryptocurrency Investment Scam in Pune

A senior citizen from Pune was defrauded of ₹21.64 lakh after being lured into investing in cryptocurrency, police said, as cybercriminals promised high returns on virtual currency.
Pune | February 07, 2026:The incident came to light when the victim filed a complaint at Kothrud police station. According to police, the complainant resides in the Kothrud area and was contacted by cyber fraudsters on December 31 through their mobile number. The scammers convinced the senior citizen that investing in virtual currency would yield significant profits.
Believing the promises, the victim transferred a substantial sum of ₹21.64 lakh to the bank accounts of the fraudsters through online methods. Once the money was transferred, the scammers ceased all communication, prompting the victim to approach the authorities.

Kothrud police have registered a case against the cybercriminals under relevant cybercrime sections and have begun an investigation to trace the perpetrators. Authorities are also warning citizens, especially senior citizens, to be cautious of unsolicited investment offers and not to transfer money to unknown accounts.
Cyber experts have noted that cryptocurrency scams often target elderly individuals who may be unfamiliar with online financial security measures, emphasizing the importance of verification before investing in virtual assets.
