Political circles in Maharashtra are abuzz with speculation about a possible reunion between Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar’s NCP factions ahead of the 2025 elections.

Mumbai | November 5, 2025 – A new twist is unfolding in Maharashtra politics, with growing speculation about a possible alliance between the two factions of the Nationalist Congress Party — one led by Sharad Pawar and the other by his nephew, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. The buzz follows several recent events where both leaders were seen sharing the same platform, reigniting talk of a political rapprochement ahead of next year’s elections.

Although both factions have maintained silence publicly, political insiders suggest that backchannel discussions are taking place. Several district-level leaders, especially from western Maharashtra, have reportedly urged both camps to reconcile for the sake of the party’s future. These leaders argue that the split has weakened the NCP’s traditional base and given rivals an advantage in rural and cooperative politics.

However, Sharad Pawar has dismissed the speculation, saying that his faction will only work with parties that share its ideology and not those who have compromised for power. Sources close to him say he is focusing on strengthening the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance with Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress rather than reuniting with Ajit Pawar’s group, which is part of the ruling Mahayuti government with the BJP.

On the other hand, Ajit Pawar’s faction is said to be exploring ways to regain ground in constituencies where the Sharad Pawar camp remains strong. While leaders from his side have avoided confirming any talks, they acknowledge that cooperation at the local level — especially in sugar cooperatives and district councils — could benefit both groups strategically.

Political observers believe that the possibility of a reunion cannot be completely ruled out, given the complex and often unpredictable nature of Maharashtra’s political landscape. Many recall that personal and political differences between the two Pawars have never completely overshadowed their shared legacy in state politics.

If the two factions were to join forces again, it could dramatically alter Maharashtra’s political balance. Together, they command a significant voter base across rural regions, particularly among the cooperative and farming communities. However, such a move would also require delicate negotiation with the BJP and the opposition MVA, both of whom would be watching closely.

For now, both camps are maintaining a cautious stance — neither confirming nor denying the possibility of future collaboration. But one thing is certain: the speculation itself has re-energized political debate in Maharashtra, making the NCP once again a central talking point in state politics.
