In the Solapur Municipal Corporation election, a united front of MVA parties including Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), Sharad Pawar’s NCP, MNS, Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi and CPI(M) aims to challenge BJP, while MIM contests independently.

Solapur | December 17, 2025: As the Solapur Municipal Corporation election approaches, political alliances are reshaping the local contest, with the opposition consolidating its challenge against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In a key development, major regional and state parties including the Congress, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), the Sharad Pawar faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP‑SP), Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) are poised to fight the civic elections together under the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) banner to present a united alternative to the BJP’s dominance in the city.

According to campaign planning and party coordination efforts, all the key MVA constituents have agreed to field senior party leaders as candidates across the 26 wards of the Solapur Municipal Corporation, ensuring that no internal seat‑sharing disputes emerge ahead of nomination deadlines. The joint strategy aims to prevent vote division among opposition groups and improve their chances against the BJP, which is contesting on its own strength.

Local party leaders confirmed that discussions are underway regarding campaign tactics and coordination, with a full‑fledged MVA leadership meeting scheduled to finalise ward allocations and campaign messaging. Representatives in the alliance have stated that their collective efforts are focused on addressing civic issues such as urban infrastructure, sanitation, water supply and local governance concerns, which they say have been neglected under the current administration.

The All India Majlis‑e‑Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), on the other hand, has opted to contest independently in selected wards, making inroads in areas where it believes grassroots support is strong. Party officials have said they are confident of securing representation in the corporation despite not joining the larger opposition coalition.

For the BJP, the upcoming municipal election remains a priority, and the party is contesting with its own slate of candidates across the city. The BJP’s engagement strategy focuses on showcasing the state government’s development initiatives and infrastructure projects in Solapur, aiming to retain voter confidence and ward seats.

Political observers say that the inclusion of MNS and VBA into the broader MVA calculations in Solapur reflects a trend of regional alliances strengthening their local presence ahead of municipal polls. Such coordinated efforts could reshape the electoral landscape and potentially reduce the BJP’s share in the civic body, which the ruling party has historically considered a stronghold.

As Solapur gears up for voting day, both the opposition coalition and the BJP are intensifying outreach efforts through public meetings, grassroots campaigns and issue‑based platforms to mobilise support. The outcome of this contest is expected to offer insights into broader political currents ahead of next year’s local body elections across Maharashtra.
