Pune, December 09, 2025 – A speeding Mahindra Thar crashed into two vehicles on Airport Road in Pune, leaving a tempo and a WagonR badly damaged. The incident took place on Monday near the 509 intersection and the driver of the Thar is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol. Police detained him immediately after the collision and have begun legal action.
According to police officials, the Thar first struck a WagonR and then hit a tempo moving ahead. The impact caused heavy damage to all three vehicles and led to traffic disruption in the busy area. The tempo driver reportedly suffered minor injuries, while others escaped with no major harm. Nevertheless, the collision created panic among motorists as it occurred during a high-traffic period.

Preliminary checks and on-site inspection indicated that the driver of the Thar may have been intoxicated. Breath analysis and medical tests have been initiated. Police say that if the presence of alcohol is confirmed, multiple charges related to drunk driving and rash driving will be registered under the Motor Vehicles Act. All involved vehicles have been seized for further examination.
Eyewitnesses described the Thar as moving at unusually high speed before the collision. Some drivers in the lane said they saw the SUV swerve just seconds before impact. CCTV footage from nearby establishments is being collected to determine the exact sequence of events. Locals say the 509 intersection has seen several incidents in recent months, raising concerns about reckless driving and poor lane discipline.
Authorities have pointed out that drunk driving remains a serious problem in the city, especially around weekends and holidays. Police have announced that checking will be intensified at vulnerable junctions and that surprise inspections will continue. Officials urged citizens to call the police if they notice erratic driving behaviour.
Residents in the area have again demanded stricter enforcement, including night-patrol units and more breathalyzer checkpoints. Many expressed relief that no lives were lost, but warned that such behaviour could easily cause major casualties. Some also asked for better road signage and lane markers around the junction to guide traffic more safely.
The driver remains in police custody while investigation continues. The incident has renewed debate on road safety in Pune and underlines the urgent need for responsible driving. With more vehicles and growing traffic, authorities say every violation increases the risk for everyone on the road.
