Supreme Court Of India Imposes Strict Discipline: Senior Lawyers Barred from Oral Mentions Under CJI Surya Kant
India
The Supreme Court of India (SC), under Chief Justice Surya Kant, has formally prohibited oral mentions by senior lawyers a sweeping change in courtroom procedure aimed at enforcing equal discipline and streamlining case listings.

New Delhi 6 December 2025:After assuming office as the 53rd Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant has initiated significant procedural reforms to promote fairness and efficiency at the Supreme Court. One of the core changes, effective 1 December 2025, disallows senior advocates from making oral mentions before any bench.
During a packed courtroom recently, Justice Surya Kant reprimanded several senior lawyers, emphasising that “rules apply equally to everyone” and that no special privilege would be tolerated. The new circular also restricts mentions before the Chief Justice of India; only a narrow set of emergencies, vetted by the Court registry, will be considered permissible.

Under the revamped system, litigants will no longer need oral mentions for standard listing. Instead, matters flagged as urgent (like personal-liberty or interim-relief petitions) will be automatically listed within two working days of registry verification.

The reforms reflect the Court’s resolve to reduce procedural delays and ensure a level playing ground for all advocates irrespective of seniority. Observers say this could help discourage informal listing practices and promote transparency in scheduling hearings.
