Swift Car Plunges Into Creek After Crashing Through Bridge Railing in Navi Mumbai

A Maruti Swift lost control after being struck, crashed through a bridge railing and fell into a creek near Kharghar; the driver died at the scene and rescue teams pulled the vehicle from water.

NAVI MUMBAI, 15 November 2025 – A man died late Friday night after his Maruti Swift crashed through a bridge railing and plunged nearly 25 feet into a creek along the Sion–Panvel highway near Kharghar. Police said the incident happened around 10 p.m. when the Swift was hit from behind by a Hyundai Creta. The impact pushed the smaller car out of control, sending it straight into the metal railing, which broke instantly before the vehicle dropped into the water below.

Local residents alerted emergency services, and a rescue team involving the fire brigade, divers and police officers reached the spot within minutes. The car was located submerged in the creek, and rescuers pulled out the driver, who was declared dead on the spot. His body was sent to Panvel Sub-District Hospital for post-mortem. Police say the Creta driver is currently being questioned, and investigations are underway to determine whether overspeeding, careless driving or mechanical issues contributed to the crash.

The incident has sparked renewed concerns about the safety of bridge railings on the Sion–Panvel stretch, which witnesses heavy traffic and frequent night-time speeding. Locals say this is not the first time a vehicle has broken through a railing in the area. They argue that existing barriers are too weak to withstand high-impact collisions. Poor lighting, inadequate reflective signage and fast-moving vehicles have been repeatedly flagged as hazards by commuters.

Police are now reviewing CCTV footage from nearby points on the highway to reconstruct the sequence of events. The traffic department is also expected to conduct a site inspection to assess the structural strength of the bridge railing and consider safety upgrades. Authorities may also introduce stricter speed monitoring and step up night patrols along accident-prone patches.

The fatal crash highlights how quickly a moment of carelessness on high-speed corridors can turn deadly. With rising traffic movement between Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Pune, experts say highway infrastructure must be reinforced to handle today’s vehicle loads and accident impact levels. For now, the investigation continues and officers say charges of negligent driving may be filed once responsibility is established.
