Thane Municipal Election 2025: State Election Commission Confirms Polls by January 31
State Election Commission
Maharashtra’s State Election Commission states that the Thane municipal election will be held before January 31, 2026, in line with state-wide civic poll directives and amid calls for clean voter rolls.
Mumbai | November 4, 2025 – The Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC) has officially announced that the elections for the Thane Municipal Corporation will be held before January 31, 2026. The decision aligns with the Supreme Court’s directive requiring all pending local body elections in the state to be completed by the end of January.
The announcement brings clarity to the long-pending civic polls in Thane, which had been delayed due to administrative and legal hurdles, including ward restructuring, reservation updates, and voter list corrections. The SEC has instructed district administrations and municipal bodies to speed up preparations so that the election schedule can be released on time.
Officials confirmed that the process of finalising ward boundaries, voter lists, and reservation allotments for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and women candidates is in its final stages. The Commission also emphasised the importance of ensuring a clean and error-free electoral roll, as opposition parties have raised concerns about duplicate names and inaccuracies in several municipal voter lists.
Political activity in Thane has intensified following the SEC’s announcement. Major parties—including the Shiv Sena (UBT), the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, BJP, Congress, and NCP—are already preparing their campaign strategies. Local leaders are focusing on development, housing, transport, and civic infrastructure, which are expected to dominate the election discourse.
The SEC’s confirmation has also given hope to residents who have been awaiting functional civic governance. The Thane Municipal Corporation has been under an administrative rule since the previous term ended, and elected representatives are expected to return once the polls are completed.
Officials say preparations will now move quickly, with the Election Commission expected to publish the final electoral list soon, followed by the official poll schedule. The process will include public notifications, nomination filing, scrutiny, and ballot arrangements.
The confirmation of a definite election window is seen as a major step toward restoring democratic functioning at the municipal level. With less than three months to go, both political parties and voters are gearing up for one of the most closely watched local body elections in Maharashtra.
