Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the continuity of political life while addressing a Rajya Sabha farewell event, as 59 members from 20 states are set to retire in the coming months

New Delhi | 19 March, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that “there is no full stop in politics,” highlighting that experienced leaders continue to contribute to democracy even after their official tenure ends. He was speaking at a farewell event for retiring Rajya Sabha members.

Between April and July, a total of 59 members from 20 states will complete their term in the Upper House. Maharashtra will see the highest number of retirements with seven members, followed by Tamil Nadu with six. Earlier, biennial elections held on March 16 filled 37 seats across 10 states, with 26 members elected unopposed.

Modi noted that debates and discussions are fundamental to parliamentary democracy, and every member plays a distinct role in shaping it. He added that farewell occasions reflect mutual respect beyond political differences, strengthening democratic traditions.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged senior leaders such as H. D. Deve Gowda, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Sharad Pawar, stating that new members should learn from their experience.

Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said that public representatives never truly retire and continue to serve society in different ways. He also stressed the need for trust and cooperation between the government and the opposition.A lighter moment occurred when Kharge made a humorous remark about Deve Gowda, drawing laughter across the House, including from the Prime Minister. Modi also praised Ramdas Athawale for bringing humour into parliamentary proceedings.

The event highlighted the importance of dialogue, cooperation, and respect in strengthening democratic institutions.
