April 6, 2026 | Pune An unusual administrative scenario has emerged in the Pune Zilla Parishad, where a shortfall of eligible candidates has led to three members being assigned dual responsibilities across subject committees.Out of a total of 83 positions available across various committees, only 80 members have qualified, resulting in the need for three individuals to serve on two committees simultaneously. This rare situation is expected to increase both the workload and the influence of these members within the local governance structure.

The Zilla Parishad operates through 10 subject committees, each responsible for specific sectors such as finance, education, health, agriculture, and social welfare. Among these, the Social Welfare Committee has the highest representation with 11 members, while the Water Management and Sanitation Committee has the lowest. The Standing Committee includes a mix of elected and ex-officio members, while several other committees such as Finance and Planning, Education, Construction, Health, Animal Husbandry, and Women and Child Welfaregenerally have eight members each. The Agriculture Committee has 10 members, reflecting its importance in the district’s rural economy.

Key office bearers, including the Zilla Parishad President and Vice President, serve as ex-officio members or chairpersons across multiple committees. For instance, the President heads both the Standing Committee and the Water Management and Sanitation Committee, while the Vice President leads the Finance and Planning as well as the Education Committee. Similarly, chairpersons of specific committees often oversee more than one portfolio. Due to these structural arrangements, several office bearers are not eligible to contest for additional committee memberships, further limiting the pool of available candidates. This imbalance has ultimately led to the current situation. Officials note that while the dual roles present an opportunity for greater involvement, they also demand efficient time management and decision-making. The three members entrusted with additional responsibilities are expected to play a crucial role in ensuring smooth functioning and coordination across committees.
