Senior Maoist leader Thippiri Tirupati alias Devji, along with other cadres, has surrendered to Telangana police ahead of the March 2026 deadline, marking a significant setback to the outlawed CPI (Maoist)
Hyderabad | February 22, 2026: In a major development in India’s campaign against left-wing extremism, senior Maoist leader Thippiri Tirupati alias Devji has surrendered to Telangana Police, security officials said on Sunday. Devji, who succeeded the late CPI (Maoist) general secretary after his death in May 2025, was accompanied by several cadres including central committee member Malla Raji Reddy alias Sangram in the surrender.
Devji, 62, originally from Jagtial district in Telangana, was a key strategist and part of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist)’s leadership. His surrender is seen as one of the heaviest blows to the organisation’s structure in recent years, occurring just days before the Union government’s March 31, 2026 deadline to eliminate Maoist insurgency across the country.

Security sources say Devji had taken over the party’s leadership following the killing of former general secretary Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraju in May 2025. Alongside Devji and Raji Reddy, approximately 16 other insurgents reportedly laid down arms at Asifabad district before the Telangana Special Intelligence Bureau (SIB).
Senior police officials indicated that the surrender was part of a broader effort under “Operation Kagar” the intensified anti-Maoist offensive involving coordinated action by central and state forces. The development follows months of sustained operations across Maoist-affected regions, including Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.

Analysts say the exit of Devji and other senior leaders will further weaken Maoist organisational capacity and may encourage additional cadres to surrender, potentially accelerating efforts to curb left-wing extremism.
